Loverne Chenoweth Crabb, 96, of Portland, Oregon passed peacefully into God’s loving arms on December 10, 2018.

Loverne was born May 23, 1922 in San Francisco, California the only child of Hobart Zendorf Chenoweth and Berenice (Jones) Chenoweth. She graduated from San Francisco State College with a degree in Education and minors in Home Economics and Art. Upon graduation, she married Rev. Martin Walter Crabb July 1, 1945. They were married nearly 45 years at the time of Martin’s death April 8, 1990.

Martin and Loverne met at Calvary United Presbyterian Church in San Francisco while Loverne was in the college youth group and choir and Martin was a recent graduate of seminary. Loverne served alongside Martin in all his pastorates in Richmond, CA, Burley, ID, Healdsburg, CA, Kelseyville, CA, and Portland, OR. She sang in the choir, played piano and used her teaching degree to lead women’s groups, teach adult and children’s Sunday School, church camp, and Vacation Bible School. She was also involved in leading Brownies and Girls Scouts and providing adult education in OSU Extension Service.

Loverne was known for her good cooking and frequently had an extra guest at the dinner table. She was an accomplished seamstress, making many clothing items for her growing family. She enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and tending her flower bed. She enjoyed birdwatching and was able to identify a variety of birds in the different states where they lived. She was an avid reader and a lifelong learner of the Bible. Her Bible is a testament of her study of the scriptures with favorite passages underlined and binding held together with tape. She memorized many verses and delighted in sharing a recitation of her newest verse committed to memory. She shared her faith with others and passed on her legacy of loving Jesus to her children and their families. She was very generous with her donations to many faith-based and charity organizations. Loverne was a good neighbor and reached out to those around her.

Loverne was preceded in death by her husband, Martin, and daughter-in-law, Joy. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, John and Anna Crabb of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Estelle and Jack Crabtree of Portland, Oregon, Charlotte and Art Hall of Philomath, Oregon, and David and Delisa Crabb of Keizer, Oregon. Loverne is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Loverne’s name may be made to Piedmont Presbyterian Church, Portland, OR.

A celebration of life will be held on March 9th at Piedmont Presbyterian Church. Ashes will be interred in the Skyline Memorial Gardens.
